A giant sinkhole in Japan which was repaired in just a week has started to sink again - forcing the road to close.

Japan appeared to have given a lesson in efficiency by hastily fixing the gaping 30 metres wide and 15 metres deep hole in Fukuoka in the south west of the country.

But the city's mayor has since apologised after the road had to be shut again - when it emerged the surface had sunk by about 2.7ins.

The fresh setback happened over the weekend and traffic was stopped at the busy intersection.

According to CNN, the mayor Soichiro Takashima took to Facebook to say sorry for not warning citizens the ground could sink again.

Officials told the broadcaster that experts had been expecting some movement as the cement and sand used in the repair job settled.

The city became the subject of international plaudits when footage emerged showing how dozens of construction workers laboured through the night with diggers, cranes and cement mixers to fix the 30m wide chasm

Remarkably the 15m deep hole was filled and the road reopened in a week.

It is thought the road collapsed because subway construction exposed support columns of nearby buildings.

Miraculously, no one was hurt when the road collapsed in Fukuoka, which is the biggest city on the southernmost main island of Kyushu.
